Carotid Doppler Ultrasound
A Carotid Doppler Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic test that uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate blood flow in the carotid arteries—the major vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain. It is primarily used to detect narrowing (stenosis) or blockages caused by plaque buildup, which can increase the risk of stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).

Purpose
- Detect carotid artery stenosis (narrowing of arteries)
- Measure blood flow velocity and direction using Doppler technology
- Assess stroke risk and guide appropriate preventive or surgical treatment
- Monitor post-surgical stents or previous vascular conditions
Procedure
- No needles, anesthesia, or radiation involved
- A handheld ultrasound probe is gently moved over the neck area
- Uses real-time imaging and Doppler effect to visualize and track blood flow
- Duration: Usually completed within 20–30 minutes
- Preparation: No special preparation is required
Benefits
- Early detection of carotid artery disease and stroke risk
- Completely painless, safe, and radiation-free
- Helps doctors make decisions on lifestyle changes, medications, or surgical options
- Useful for patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of cardiovascular disease
